Hen Dy, self catering accommodation

in the grounds of The Nanhoron Estate

The Hen Dy (‘old house’ in Welsh) is the oldest surviving house on the estate.  It faces south overlooking the walled gardens with views to the parkland and woodland walk, and beside the house, a Baroque garden.  The house used to be the Gardeners’ Bothy, Brew House and Laundry for the Estate and has a bell tower which was used to announce mealtimes &c.   The Hen Dy is traditional Welsh stone-built house with a slate roof.

"Hen Dy - one of Britain's 50 Best Holiday Cottages [The Observer, Sunday 28 June 2009]"

"We have enjoyed out Autumn stay at the Hen Dy very much. …We have been very content here at the house, with its fabulous gardens and woodland walk. Very comfortable here and a most delightful holiday cottage. We have felt able to switch off and relax. Thank you for your hospitality!"
Louise, Richard, Alex (aged 3), Lorna & Roy October 2011

"The gardens and walks so delightful. The Hen Dy has been a beautiful place for our rare family gathering.Thank you."
Karin & Robin November 2009

The Hen Dy has central heating + an open fire for those chilly evenings.   The Sitting Room is furnished with sofas and armchairs, a TV (with digital connection), CD and DVD player, and lots of books and games.   It overlooks the West Garden and what will be the Baroque Garden when we have completed it.

The Dining Room seats 8 and has a bar and sideboard with a plate warmer.   The Kitchen is fitted with an Aga, electric oven and hob in an island unit, microwave, washing-up machine, ‘fridge and freezer. In addition there is a Boot Room, a Larder (which also houses the washing machine and tumble dryer) and a Shower Room that contains a downstairs loo.

"Thank you once again for a lovely enjoyable stay, weather fantastic, company great, dogs tired. What more can you ask for? Beautiful house, gardens and a most beautiful peninsula."
Desma, Bridget, Anne, Gail and 2 dogs P.S look forward to being here again. November 2011

"Thank you so much for a wonderful stay. The house is a lovely home from home and it is such a pleasure to find a well-equipped kitchen."
Dave, Kate, Tabitha, Adam, Sarah & Olivia New Year 2010

Hen Dy is disabled friendly with ramps to the house and the back door.   The Shower Room is equipped to take a wheelchair and there are handrails in the corridor and by all the loos.   There is a stair lift to take you upstairs.

Upstairs there is a wide airy landing full of light leading to four bedrooms – The Master Bedroom has a double bed (it can be split into twin beds), an en-suite bathroom with an airing cupboard.   The Dressing Room (now a double bedroom) with its own hand basin, leads off this bathroom. The second bathroom is between The Round Room (so called because of its round window) which is a single bedroom, and The East Room, a twin-bedded room.   All the double bedrooms overlook the garden and have fitted wardrobes.

"I can’t believe no-one’s stayed here for a month – what a waste! … Thank you for creating this haven in the midst of such peace. Lovely to use an Aga again after ten years. I have withdrawal symptoms already! As the good doctor pronounced “Our best family holiday”… to date.
The Runswick Coles August 2011

“One more thing: Nanhoron tomatoes: simply the best! Jamie Oliver eat your heart out.”

"Thank you for this week on wonderful Llyn Peninsula. Your garden is truly beautiful and the Hen Dy very well appointed with a love of details which we much appreciated (not to speak of the fresh flowers and bottle of wine on our arrival!)"
Rudolph & Marie-Pierre May 2009

"We enjoyed sea & sand; the house; the garden; the woods; & the quiet."
David July 2009

Finally, there is an Airing Room on the top floor equipped with an iron, ironing board, a Sheila Maid rack and clothes racks where you can dry wet bathing costumes or rain-soaked shooting or walking gear!

Hen Dy guests are welcome to wander through the West Garden and the Woodland Walk at their leisure.   There is a small simple garden attached to the Hen Dy, with garden furniture.   Beside the house what was the eighteenth-century Drying Green and then a Swimming Pool garden, is now a Baroque Garden with a reflecting pool, topiary and box hedges and soon it will be complete with an Orangery and Gazebo.

"We’ve been to some gorgeous beaches all over the world but can honestly say that those here on the Llyn rival any of them. Hen Dy has been a lovely place to stay. We were here with our baby who loved the woodland walk and sleeping with his window open listening to the birds or the wind. It’s a perfect place to stay with a baby!”
Clare, Richard & Henry (5 months), July 2011

"Fantastic to come to holiday house that has been loved over the years – often they feel orphaned and uncared for; the Hen Dy is quite the opposite. And an unexpected delight to be on top of the garden, so full of treasures."
Rachel, Piers, Alexander & Catherine August 2009

Household linen, bed linen, hand and bath towels are included in the price of your holiday.   Electricity, heating oil and a supply of logs are also provided in the cost. Sadly, the Hen Dy is not very suitable for young children as there is an ornamental pool close to the house and steep drops down into the Walled Garden.

Please note that the Hen Dy is a non-smoking house.

We let Friday - Friday.

Hen Dy is listed on Alastair Sawday's Special Escapes.
